Stability Push-Ups

Stability Push-Up

I was doing counter push-ups for the 30 Day Challenge I just finished, but, well, I can't ALWAYS make it to the gym. The gym has a nice window in the cable stack area with lovely rounded edges to the windowsill... that's where I like to do my counter push-ups.

At home, options are less nice, my kitchen counters have a sharp edge and even with a folded towel to protect my hands, it just plain hurts, even for a few push-ups. So today, when I realized that I probably would not make it to the gym after doing my Nordic Track intervals in the morning, I decided to trot out ye olde TRX trainer and try a few stability push-ups.

I set the TRX trainer to its fully shortened length. That might be a touch higher than my counters, but I am pushing against an unstable, suspended surface, so it is TOUGH! I'll list what I did and update as I improve.

11-18-2008 Training: Resistance: Stability Push-ups

One minute rest between sets

Set 1 = 8 reps
Set 2 = 5 reps
Set 3 = 4 reps

I can't tell you how tricky it was to try and photograph this! My camera remote gives me TWO SECONDS to get in position before it fires the camera! I captured myself in the down position... that's the harder for me to hold than the up position! Feet are together, which makes it less stable than if I had them apart. (The latter is difficult to do in my doorway corner anyway.)

  1. Wow that TRX Pro looks great. I might have to get me one.

  2. Cynthia Cynthia Cynthia!! Sorry I haven't checked my blog and I just saw your long post on my comments today. I truly appreciate your advice.

I think I will ask for more inputs about my problems. It seems to get worse again and I'm tired of this vicious cycle. I'm tired of thinking and being obsessed about it alone, so I will ask what people think would be a good solution. I will be posting a blog about that today.

Oh, your picture is great. Can't believe you can walk back and get down to that position in 2 seconds. Like a superwoman lol.

  3. Hey Mr. Meltdown! I have to say, I like the TRX. It makes some things, like squats and lunges possible for me, where I might not be able to do them without the assist.

And other things, like the push-ups, it jumps to a different level. You can use it to do some stretches too!

  4. Warasa, I saw your post today and I'll try and get over soon to comment. I'm not sure anything I can say will help, as I'm afraid I identify all too much with some of what you mentioned and it has taken me a large chunk of my life to start to get things under control.

Oh, I don't walk to the camera, if you look closely (especially in the larger linked picture), you'll see that my index finger on my right hand is raised slightly. Well, I'm holding the little camera remote in that hand. So I get in the "up" part of the pushup, rotate that hand slightly, use my index finger to fire the remote at the camera and then quickly move into the "down" part of the pushup at which point the camera fires.

It's still tricky as hell! 2 seconds goes by FAST, even if you are mostly in place.
