It’s a scary world sometimes

I was doing the veggie shopping at Albertsons the other day. Would you believe the young man who was checking did not recognize broccoli? Nor was he entirely sure what the cucumber in my basket was!

Now, maybe this is a factor of living in small towns, in rural areas, because I don't ever remember this sort of thing happening while I lived in the Bay Area, CA. But if anything, you'd think people brought up in rural towns might recognize more vegetables, not fewer. While I lived in western North Dakota, I veggie shopped regularly between the two grocery stores in town for a year and a half and in that entire time, I did not find ONE SINGLE CHECKER who KNEW what a zucchini was. Not once.

We're not talking exotic produce here!

Today's children/young adults are not apparently being exposed to very many vegetables. This seems so sad. One can't help but wonder what they are eating instead! You know, I rarely ever see folks ahead of me in line at the store with a cart full of produce and lean meats/fish. Most carts seem to be full of assorted boxes and soda and bread. I can't help but wonder if it is a factor of economics... i.e. produce being so expensive compared to the processed junk foods. But maybe it is simply that people don't like their veggies and prefer to eat the junk. I don't remember it being quite as bad in California, but then again, the produce was much nicer and fresher there.

Am I the only one who looks at other people's shopping practices or do you readers notice the same thing?
